Can I Use a Portable Generator To Power Lights and Appliances In My
Home? Before I answer that question, I’ll start by saying emphatically, “Never plug your generator
directly into any outlet in your home to back feed power into your house. You create a number of extremely
dangerous safety
hazards. You can use a portable generator to power your home provided that you have a
qualified electrician to install a transfer switch. If you are not qualified, never attempt to perform this
installation.
Should I Install the Generator Myself?
It depends on what type of generator you are purchasing. If it is a portable generator that only requires set-up
and no technically advanced installation, the answer would be, “Yes!” Provided that you understand and can
follow all of the manufacturer’s instructions. For the more complicated home installations and all other
commercial, business and industrial installations, we advise hiring a specialist.

must you use an extension cord, use one that meets or exceeds the wattage load and remember to check the cord
