Onan Generators

The Onan Company (now known as Cummins Power Generation) has successfully been in the power generation business for over forty years. That’s the prime reason their name is synonymous with power! You can find Cummins in virtually every corner of the earth, the South Pacific, Northeast and Southeast Asia, Pakistan, India, East Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America, the United States and Canada.

When Onan Generators was taken over by Cummins Inc., it gave their product line a tremendous boost because Cummins is an experienced builder of diesel generators, whose reputation is sterling. To help comprehend the magnitude of this acquisition, note this; the Onan Power Generation Business Unit is now ranked as Cummins’ second-largest business segment. That’s saying a lot. This business unit manufactures, sells and services power generation and related equipment such as alternators and PTO Generators, designed for both consumer and commercial use.

This newly formed partnership offers a wider range of distributors and repair service centers to the already well received Onan Generator line. One of things we’ve been hearing since the merger is that customer support and service for their products is more accessible. Any astute businessperson knows that good customer support and service translates into happy customers and happy customers translate into returning customers and word-of-moth referrals.

When you think of the Onan Generator line, don’t limit yourself to portable generators only. Onan also provides Commercial Mobile, Marine and RV Generators for various functions and uses.

What is your purpose for buying a generator: Replace Factory RV Generator

Onan Generator Model: Onan Marquis RV Generator 6500

When my factory generator in my 1990 motor home gave out, I decided to replace it with this Onan. It’s been a year and a half and I am impressed. This unit starts with a breeze and quietly runs two air conditioning units with no problems and power to spare. This was a better deal than going with the factory replacement. We ended up with a quieter more fuel efficient unit and Northern Tools made ordering as simple as 1-2-3! If you own an RV and are looking for power solutions, I highly recommend Onan.

Pros: fuel efficient, super quiet, easy start and power to spare

Cons: Couldn’t find a deep discount anywhere

Overall Rating: 5 out of 5

Would you recommend Onan Generators?: YES!

Onan Generator Model: Cummins Onan P4300ie Inverter Portable Generator

When we barely made it through that last power outage in Florida, we decided at that time on two critical issues. Number one, we we’re going to be prepared in the event that we experienced another outage. And number two, to purchase a reliable generator with a reputation for reliability. Our first test came during the 2008 hurricane season. We had to run our Onan generator for three days straight, shutting down only to check the oil and to refuel. It performed flawlessly. Of course when the South Florida power grid mysteriously failed and caused a massive outage along the east coast, from the Daytona Beach area into Monroe County, we didn’t skip a beat.

Pros: fuel efficient, super quiet, easy start and power to spare

Cons: None to think of, we love this unit

Onan Generator Model: Onan RS 15000

This is an excellent generator and has served me well. My only pet peeve is the service and support. I consider myself to be pretty astute and if need be a hands on type of guy. I ordered a couple of replacement parts for my Onan RS 15000 and had to wait for almost an eternity just to get them. Then when I checked on pricing for service, I was shocked; the rates were astronomical and you’re literally forced into a corner because Onan Generators are not serviced by anyone but Onan and I think that stinks to high heaven. My overall opinion – it’s a great generator, but because of the aforementioned factors, I’d go with another brand.

Pros: starts every time, quiet, easy start and power to spare

Cons: Takes too long to receive parts, service rates after warranty expires are too high

Overall Rating: 3 out of 5

Would you recommend Onan Generators?: No
